How to Increase the Speed of Google Chrome

Google Chrome is a very popular browser, often preferred by Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari and other alternative browsers. In its effectiveness, however, Chrome faces some problems, mainly linked to excessive memory consumption. Google’s browser uses a lot of memory to work perfectly. With the passing of time this can be a problem, slowing down program and navigation performance considerably.

Fortunately, there are several ways to improve Google Chrome performance. You can set the amount of memory that Google Chrome will use, or deactivate some of the functions that the program uses. This Guide to Technology Passion shows you the key solutions to speed up Chrome.

Method 1: Increase the Chrome Cache

The first solution to optimize this browser is to increase the size of the cache. The Google Chrome cache stores information on websites (images, texts, and more) that need to be retrieved several times to improve navigation speed. The purpose of the cache is therefore to avoid retrieving information repeated by the server, quickly retrieving it from the local copy to the client. If we increase the program cache size – without exaggerating – we will therefore increase Google Chrome’s speed.

Before you increase the size of your Google Chrome cache, you must check the current size and maximum cache size limit. Follow this procedure to check the size of your cache and other Google Chrome information.

  1. Open  Chrome Google
  2. In the address bar, type “chrome: // net-internals / # HttpCache” and press  Enter
  3. Click  Cache in the left-hand vertical bar

Between multiple information, you can see the current size (in bytes) and the maximum cache size used by Google Chrome. Note the highlighted values.

At this point, you can increase the cache size by doing this …

  1. Quit  Google Chrome
  2. Right-click on the Google Chrome icon on the desktop that is used to launch the browser. If the Google Chrome link is unavailable, create one.
  3. Select  Properties
  4. Select the Connection tab
  5. At the end of the destination path  add this line “-disk-cache-size = 10000000” where10000000 is the value that you want to assign in bytes. You can assign any size. As a reference, remember that 1073741824 bytes are 1 GB
  6. Click Apply  and then OK.

When you are done, you can reopen Google Chrome and repeat the verification operation to check the new Cache Allocation.

Method 2: Remove Chrome Extensions

Browser extensions add functionality to Google Chrome and can be installed from the Chrome Store. Extensions also consume system resources, and when they are unwanted, they can also cause damage. Turning off unwanted or unused extensions is a great way to speed up Chrome. Follow these steps to turn off extensions:

  1. Open  Chrome Google
  2. type “chrome: // extensions” in the address bar and press

All extensions loaded in the Browser will be displayed. To disable what we do not need, just clear the Enable option. This way the extension will not be deleted but simply disabled and available for future reactivation. If we think the extension will never be able to use it, you can permanently delete it by clicking on the basket icon next to each item you want to delete.

Method 3: Remove unwanted applications

In addition to extensions, Google Chrome is expected to integrate some apps into the Browser. Like extensions, apps may also slow down and make internet browsing with this browser ineffective. To delete or check installed apps, follow these steps:

  1. Open  Chrome Google
  2. Type “chrome: // apps” in the address bar and press Enter
  3. They will see all the apps installed in the browser
  4. Right- click  on the app you want to remove and select  Remove from Chrome …
  5. Click Remove again   to confirm

Method 4: Use the Forecast Service

Using Google Chrome Forecasting Service lets you load pages faster. This option is enabled by default but may have been disabled and it is good to check that it is not.

  1. Open  Chrome Google
  2. Go to the Google Chrome menu by clicking on the three vertical vertices in the upper right corner
  3. Select  Settings
  4. Scroll down and select  Show Advanced Settings …
  5. In the Privacy and Security session, verify that the ” Use a Forecast Service to Speed Up Loading Pages”  option is checked and turned on otherwise

Method 5: Take advantage of experimental features

The experimental features of Google Chrome are innovative features that are not yet tested or released to users. While being dreadful and risky for the sake of browser stability, some of them can be exploited to increase the performance of Google Chrome. To access Chrome experimental features, follow these steps:

  1. Open  Chrome Google
  2. In the address bar, type “chrome: // flags” and press  Enter
  3. At this point, we’ll see a list of all the “experiments” available for Chrome
  4. Search and activate these features by using the CTRL + F key combination to get the search box at the top right of the program
  5. Search for “Experimental Canvas Functions” and click on  Enable  in the button below the tab
  6. Look for “Quick Tab / Window Lockout” and click on  Enable  in the button below the tab
  7. Look for “Number of raster threads”, click on the drop down under the tab and select the value “4”
  8. Look for “Automatic card deletion”, click the drop down under the tab and select “Enable”
  9. Look for “Default Width of Section”, click the drop down under the tab and select “512”
  10. Look for “Default section height”, click the drop down under the tab and select “512”

Restore the Default Settings

Let’s finally try the simplest method to try to improve the performance of Google Chrome. With a simple option, you can restore the default settings of Google Chrome to its original state by removing any problems or damages. To restore Google Chrome, follow these steps:

  1. Open Google Chrome
  2. Access the settings menu by clicking on the three vertical balls at the top right
  3. Click on “Show advanced settings” at the bottom of the page
  4. Click “Reset Settings” at the bottom of the page
  5. Confirm by pressing “Reset”
